Israel ranks 112th out of 180 in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), scoring 51.06—classified as “difficult,” its lowest ever, down 11 places from 2024.

No Israeli journalists were killed in Israel proper in 2025–2026 due to their work. However, the Gaza conflict made the region the deadliest for media: RSF reports ~29 Palestinian journalists killed in Gaza in 2025 (CPJ: 86+ total since war start), accounting for nearly half of global journalist deaths (IFJ: 128 in 2025).

In the West Bank, settler attacks injured Palestinian and international journalists (CPJ: 11 incidents, 23+ affected in 2025). Detentions, assaults, equipment seizures, and impunity persist, alongside self-censorship and online threats. These factors severely undermine independent journalism amid ongoing conflict.
